Build, buy, or partner for revenue capabilities

Synergy Growth Advisors · Fractional CRO, Speaker & Author

Every gap in your revenue engine eventually forces the same decision, whether you name it or not. You're missing a capability, building a function, demand generation, sales enablement, a new channel, revenue operations, and you have three ways to get it: build it in-house, buy it through a hire or acquisition, or partner with someone who already has it. Most teams default to one answer reflexively. The ones who grow fastest treat it as a real decision every time.

The reason the default is dangerous is that each path has a different cost, speed, and risk profile, and the right answer changes with the situation. Build when you shouldn't and you waste a year reinventing something you could have rented. Partner when you shouldn't and you hand a competitor control of a capability that should have been your moat.

A simple way to make the call

Strip the decision down to a few questions and the answer usually becomes clear. How core is this capability to how you win? How fast do you need it? How much does it change or require constant tuning? And how much of it already exists, well-built, outside your walls?

Build what makes you different. Buy what you need faster than you can grow. Partner for what others do better than you will.

Where the decision goes wrong

The common failure is emotional rather than analytical. Teams build because building feels like control and like real work, even when a partner would be faster and better. They partner because it's cheaper this quarter, then wake up dependent on someone else for something central to how they compete. And they buy in a hurry, under pressure, without a plan to integrate what they acquired, so the capability never actually takes root.

Revisit as you scale

The right answer isn't permanent. A capability you sensibly partnered for at one stage may become core enough to build at the next, and something you built early may be better handed to a specialist later. Treat build-buy-partner as a decision you return to, not a box you check once.

The next time you spot a gap in your revenue engine, resist the reflex to fill it the way you always have. Run it through the frame honestly: core or not, fast or patient, differentiating or commodity. The quality of that decision, repeated across every gap, is quietly one of the biggest determinants of how fast and how durably you grow.
